Working Water

Utility water is utilized for showering, laundry, washing dishes, and cleaning. Optimal utility water should be free of:

  • Hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium)

  • Iron, sulfur, manganese, tannins (organic color), or suspended materials such as sand and silt

  • Chlorine taste and odor (chlorine may be necessary to make water safe for consumption, but it is undesirable to ingest or inhale)

  • pH imbalances that may cause acidic, corrosive water

Drinking Water

Possibly the most crucial type of water, drinking water requires thorough treatment to ensure it is healthy, pure, and great tasting, considering that we consume it. The challenges posed by aging infrastructure make it difficult for municipalities to guarantee water safety, as evident from the frequent issuance of boil-water advisories.

What is a Water Softener?

A water softener is made up of three main components:

  1. Control Valve - decides when regeneration is required, controls water flow direction, and regulates the duration of each cycle.

  2. Pressure Tank - contains the resin that replaces hardness minerals with sodium and is underwater line pressure.

  3. Salt Tank or Cabinet - stores the salt that produces the brine solution utilized to regenerate the softening resin.

How Does a Water Softener Work?

Through a procedure called ion exchange, a water softener eliminates hardness minerals (such as calcium and magnesium) in the following manner:

  1. Raw water flows through a sodium-charged softening resin bed housed in a pressure tank.

  2. Hardness ions adhere to the resin, replacing the harmless sodium ions.

  3. Over time, the resin accumulates only hardness minerals and necessitates regeneration.

  4. The control valve keeps track of water usage and decides when to regenerate.

  5. The resin is backwashed to flush out impurities.

  6. A potent brine solution is subsequently drawn through the bed, and hardness ions are replaced with sodium ions.

  7. The hardness ions are then washed away and discarded.

  8. The softener is now prepared to soften water once more.
